INHUMANE TREATMENT & ALLEGATION OF SUMMARY EXECUTION OF NIGERIANS IN LIBYA
London (UK): ActFast (Diaspora Affairs Response Unit of arisenigeria) wish to condemn the current inhumane treatment and indeed allegations against the Libyan security agencies of summary execution of Nigerians living in Libya.
Recent deportees have claimed that the Libyan authorities “treat them like slaves, beat them up like animals”, and even “condemn them to death” while denying them legal representation or an interpreter (as the legal process is conducted in Arabic). Worryingly, innocent Nigerians are detained for several months without charge in maximum prisons and immigration detention camps.
Libya’s ruler, Moammar Qadhafi is the current Chairman of the African Union (AU) whose ConstitutiveAct of 11 th July 2000 guarantees respect for Human Rights and the Rule of Law.
ActFast recalls that the Scottish government in the United Kingdom (UK) recently released a very high profile Libyan prisoner on compassionate grounds. Why can’t the Libyan government extend similar compassion to fellow Africans (Nigerians) that have not been convicted of any crime?
ActFast , on behalf of all Nigerians call on the Libyan government to:
- Halt deportation of all Nigerians from Libya immediately;
- Release all Nigerians in illegal detention and deportation camps; and
- Grant immediate immigration amnesty to all Nigerians in Libya
The systemic killing and abuse of Nigerians under the guise of immigration control must stop. The AfricanCommission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR); AmnestyInternational; the United Nations’ Officeof the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and indeed the Nigerian government are hereby put on notice.
Thank you very much .
