REMEMBERING GANI FAWEHINMI IN A SPECIAL WAY!!!
In the last few days, since the demise of perhaps Nigeria’s best Legal icon, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, many, especially the unpatriotic elements in our country had suddenly become relevant, using his death as an opportunity to launder their image and assert their socio-political relevance. But that is to be expected, and so we aren’t really surprised, because historically whenever great men like Chief Fawehinmi passes on, all sorts of people catches on the moment and use it as a pad to launch themselves in order to improve their otherwise battered political image. It happened when Socrates died; so it was with Mahatma Ghandi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The good news however, is that the people aren’t fooled by such.
In the light of this mischievous socio-political posturing by the political haemorrhaged individuals in our society, we were quite pleased to find out that a lot of our fellow citizens are remembering Chief Fawehinmi silently but remarkably. One of such Nigerians gave me a call some days ago and requested me to help popularise his humble efforts to immortalise Gani. He said he wished to remain anonymous and asked me to promise him never to reveal his identity (of course, I did). He had designed a Website: http://www.ganiliveson.org where Nigerians from all walks of life can remember Gani in their own unique way by posting articles, comments and suggestion on the Site. According to him, he doesn’t want to be seen as seeking cheap popularity and glory. I was really touched by his humane gesture. These Nigerians may never make the headlines and their names might never appear in Who is who in the society, but as Dr. King would put it, When the blazing light of truth is focused on this marvelous age in which we live, men and women will know and generations unborn will be taught that we have a finer society, because of these humble children of God.
