FEDERAL GOVERNMENT REACTION TO NIGERIA’S ELECTION INTO THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL
The Federal Government has received with excitement, the news of the election of Nigeria into the United Nations Security Council. The election is a clear endorsement of the leadership of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and the Seven-Point Agenda of the administration. Nigeria’s election is also an acknowledgement of the home-grown solution found by the administration to the Niger Delta conflict by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua through a Presidential Amnesty implemented with honesty and commitment. Government also views the development as an appreciation of Nigeria’s leading contributions to peace keeping operations around the world. The election is also coming at a time when Nigeria is set to host the world in the Under 17 FIFA World Football Championship expected to commence in the country in a few days time. By the election, Nigeria is now among the privileged but few eminent nations expected to sit in the United Nations Security Council to evolve policies and make decisions on conflict prevention, management and resolution for sustenance of world peace and security.
Nigeria wishes to reassure the International Community that its Permanent Representative in the United Nations, Prof. Joy Ogwu is a renowned diplomat whose contributions to deliberations will certainly enrich debates. The Federal Government wishes to express her appreciation to all friendly nations whose support made the election possible.
