DELE GIWA’S SPIRIT COMES ALIVE!

As Nigeria marks the 23 rd anniversary of the gruesome murder of the founding Editor-in-Chief of Newswatch Magazine, Mr. Dele Giwa on October 19, 2009, the Friends of Fawehinmi (FOF) have concluded plans to mark the day.

The battle to unmask the killers of Giwa was one of the titanic battles Gani fought which brought him into constant brushes with the Babangida regime. The unresolved murder of Giwa has been followed with the murders of many other journalists since then, the latest being Mr. Bayo Ohu of TheGuardian.

To nudge the conscience of Nigeria to bring the killers of these men of the pen to book and stop behaving like the demented chicken that sucks its finest eggs, Friends of Fawehinmi (FOF) have commissioned the performance of Fredrick Durrennmatt’s “Conversation at Night”, the dramatization of the exchanges between a writer about to be executed for his beliefs and the henchman in the last hour of his life.

The performance features veteran actor, Segun Sofowote, and star actor, Wale Macaulay.

The performance will be spiced with a special rendition by elegant stallion, Onyeka Onwenu, with a poetry reading by Mr. Tunji Sotimirin and short speeches by media and pro-democracy icons.

The families of the late Dele Giwa and Chief Gani Fawehinmi would be Special Guests of Honour at the event holding viz:

"First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me--
and there was no one left to speak out for me".
