Press Statement

On December 9, 2009, the former governor of Sokoto State, His Excellency, Dr. Attahiru Bafarawa attended a meeting of opposition political parties and politicians in Nigeria at Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Abuja. Former Head of State and presidential candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Muhammadu Buhari, former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Action Congress (AC) Atiku Abubakar and other leading political figures were in attendance.

After the meeting the attendees started departing the venue. As Gov. Attahiru Bafarawa was moving out of the venue he was accosted by officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). They told him he was under arrest but did not tell him the reason for the arrest.

Gov. Bafarawa has since been in the custody of the EFCC. The governor would like to use this opportunity to enjoin his supporters in Sokoto State and indeed Nigeria to go about their businesses calmly. Gov. Bafarawa being a law abiding citizen believes that his vindication will come when the matter comes before a court of law. Until then he has decided to keep his fate in the hands of Allah.
