As Nigerians brace for another year in its tortuous history, the Lagos State chapter of the Action Congress has thrown a challenge to all public officials to ensure that the country is pulled back from the brinks of a failed state where it is tottering at present. The party says that the dysfunctional nature of the country has greatly shrunk its potentials as well as those of its peoples in the comity of nations and that conscious efforts must be made to save the country from total collapse by those in positions of authority.

In a release signed by the Lagos State Publicity secretary of the AC, Joe Igbokwe, the party says that the nation’s leaders stand eternally damned if the country fails to make any appreciable impact this year in the lives of the long suffering Nigerians. It therefore calls for total commitment of those in positions of authority to ensure the negative prospects of the country are turned for the good of all.

“As we enter into what should be the golden year of the country’s existence as an independent nation, we cannot but point out that the nation is hovering on the brinks of collapse through the conscious efforts of those that have occupied leadership positions in the country since independence. We are aware that Nigerians have totally lost faith in the leadership and at present, such loss of faith is in its highest ever level and should not be ignored further.

“As a party committed to the good and welfare of the populace, we believe that the best way to rejuvenate the faith of the people in governance and leadership is through commitment and sincerity, which will ensure that the interests of the people are placed far and above the interests of those at the helm of affairs. We locate this needed panacea for the sagging faith of the people in governance in performance and accountability. We believe that when the people get their due rewards from government, they would renew faith in the system and this will ensure the rapid growth and transformation of the country.

“Lagos AC is proud to point  to our dear state, Lagos as a case study in what we are prescribing for leaders in Nigeria where Nigerians are seeing a ray of hope in the gloomy picture that pervade all over the country. We want to proudly point the new Lagos to our leaders as an example on how Nigerian leaders would employ performance to restore hope and confidence on leadership. We urge all Nigerians leaders to learn from the massive transformation going on now in Lagos and how Nigerians are employing this as a yardstick to once again, believe that there are hopes that Nigeria can pull out of the present quagmire through hard work and sterling performance of those in authority.

“We want to remind elected officers at every level and every part of the country that Nigeria faces an implosion if we continue wasting the great opportunities available to the country and sentencing Nigerians to a permanent life of squalor and poverty. We want to remind them that Nigerian people are getting restless and that the cost of our collective inactivity may be disastrous in a very short time. We want all elected public officials to curtail their greed and work for the long suffering Nigerian people in 2010 so that Nigerians can celebrate the golden independence anniversary of the country with something to cheer for.”

Joe Igbokwe.
