PRESS STATEMENT
The Federal Government has been called upon to take decisive action on the threat by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) to sack Julius Berger Construction Company from the Federal Capital Territory.
This is to prevent the company from winding up its operations in Abuja and subsequently throw thousands of its workers out of their jobs.
A Human Rights Activist and Pubic Affairs Analyst Alhaji Ahmed Adoke who made the call in Abuja warned the Federal Government against closing its eyes to the threat by MEND on Julius Berger.
In a press statement in Abuja last night, Alhaji Adoke said that consequences of sacking Julius Berger from work by MEND would be too devastating to the Nigerian populace because of the huge number of people working for the firm.
The human rights activist said that much as efforts of the Federal Government to tackle the Niger Delta Crisis can be commended, the utterances of Rivers State Governor - Mr. Rotimi Chibuzie Amaechi have not helped the matter.
He urged Mr. Amaechi to be diplomatic in handling the issues of MEND rather than provoking the militants with counter threat that may escalate their grievances.
Alhaji Adoke asked Federal Government to do all within its power to prevent closure of any sites of Julius Berger in either Abuja or Lagos due to threat by MEND.
He said that any attempt to allow Julius Berger to close any of its work sites will have devastating effects on Nigeria’s image in the International Community as a country without adequate security arrangements for protection of lives and properties.
