PRONACO On The Niger Delta

PRESS RELEASE

PRONACO ON THE NIGER DELTA

The Pro National Conference Organisation, PRONACO on Sunday condemns the orgy of violence foisted on the Niger delta region and charged the 40 member Technical Committee on the Niger Delta to be focussed and unwavering in the urgent task of laying the ground for the stability and development of the Niger delta.

PRONACO opined that the Niger delta may as well be on the verge of recovery if the, technical committee is allowed to do its work without distraction but with utmost concern for the impoverished mass of the region, who deserve urgent attention if the region must survival its present pressure.

According to a statement issued in Lagos by its spokesperson, Mr Wale Okunniyi, PRONACO said present and future generation of Niger deltans would not be charitable to members of the committee if they fail in their current assignment to set the right tone and template for the resolution of the Niger delta crisis.

“It is our considered opinion that the technical committee should quickly draw up a new development frame for the region, while  all other duplicated developmental effort and structures, including the NDDC should now be  ramified and repositioned to curb wastages and corruption” Okunniyi counselled

Acknowledging that some members of the committee played active roles at the PRONACO Confab, which produced a draft peoples’ constitution for the nation last year, Okunniyi said the current effort is an opportunity for members of the committee to prove their acquired wealth of experience on issues of federal autonomy, derivation principles, devolution of powers among others

“While appreciating the commitment of government to provide a ground norm for the resolution of Niger delta crisis, as exemplified by the formation of the technical committee and the creation of a Niger delta ministry, we make bold to reiterate here that the current intervention in the Niger delta may become counterproductive and wasteful, if isolated from the broad National constitutional crisis in the country” Okunniyi asserted. PRONACO also said that as a leading platform and foremost resource group working for genuine resolution of the crisis of federalism in Nigeria, its secretariat will not hesitate to contribute the enormous resources at its disposal to the committee’s work, if invited to do so.
