PRESS STATEMENT
15th October, 2008
NO PETITION AGAINST OBASANJO, DISMISS MRS FARIDA WAZIRI
Conference of Nigeria Political Parties {CNPP}, was outraged when in
response to our question, Mrs Farida Waziri willfully lied that
ex-president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has no petition with the EFCC and
that some of the case files of the 31 ex-governors whose cases had been
investigated by her predecessor are missing or distorted.
‘I am working on what I have found; I have not received
any petition against Obasanjo and there is no case file
there. ……. I don’t have 31 files, there is no
prima-facie case against them’----Mrs Farida Waziri, 12th
October 2008.
It could be recalled that CNPP had on 24th December 2007 filed, after
the immunity clause had exited, three petitions requesting the EFCC to
investigate and prosecute ex-president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo,
Professor Maurice Iwu and Alhaji Adamu Waziri, for gross misconduct,
which EFCC acknowledged in a letter dated 9th January 2008. We are also
aware that the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders {CACOL}, filed petition
as well.
We were appalled to note that the patronizing and rescue statement
issued yesterday by the Commission, through Mr Femi Babafemi, Head Media
and Publicity, after the fiasco, failed to either come out clean or
acknowledge the receipt of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s petition or name
the number of ex-governors’ petitions in their custody.
From the foregoing, it is crystal clear that Mrs Farida Waziri shields
and protects Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and some ex-governors, thus
obstructing justice, engaging in arbitrary application of the rule of
law, contrary to Section 38 of EFCC Act.
She has also violated Section 36 of the EFCC Act, for failure to submit
2007 Report of the activities of the Commission to the National Assembly
on or before 30th September, which is an indication of inability to
discharge the functions of the Commission.
It is trite in law that he who goes to equity must come with clean
hands, in this instance Mrs Farida Waziri having descended into the
arena of looters, loses the credibility of holding the high office of
Chairman EFCC.
For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to state that our primary concern is
that the failure of President Yaradua regime, wittingly or unwittingly;
to bring to book those who looted and squandered our Golden – Oil – Age,
will gravely impair our march to genuine democracy and our crusade to
wipe off Do – or - Die politics.
Accordingly, Conference of Nigeria Political Parties {CNPP}, challenges
President Umaru Musa Yaradua to as a matter of urgent national
importance invoke Section 3{2} of the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission {EFCC} Act, to dismiss Mrs Farida Waziri, Chairperson of
EFCC.
