The patients, whose bill ran into several millions of Naira, comprise twelve males and six females.
Otti, who was represented during the settlement of the bills by Mr. Mike Akpara and Ferdinand Ekeoma, had gone to the hospital a few weeks ago to visit a friend who was on admission, but was besieged by the indigent patients who recognized him and sought his assistance.
The former banker directed that the bills of the patients be sent to him for settlement. Media Assistant to Otti, Ferdinand Ekeoma, stated that the gesture was purely a humanitarian assistance from the Alex Otti foundation aimed at ameliorating the plight of the patients.
Speaking on behalf of other beneficiaries, a 61 year old patient, Mr. Ikechukwu Madumere whose bill stood at N1.1 Million, following a surgery he underwent, explained that he had been in the hospital for 6 months and expressed gratitude to Otti for his generosity.
Also speaking, the Catholic Administrator of the Madonna Christian Hospital, Rev. Father Christian Anokwuru made the commended the former banker for his generosity in offsetting the medical bills of the indigent patients who could not take care of their medical bills due to financial constraints.
He expressed gratitude that Dr. Otti could extend such gesture even when he merely ran into the patients during a visit to the hospital.
The Administrator noted that Otti had also identified with the Hospital at the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic by donating protective equipment which enabled the hospital to take care of patients.
Anokwuru explained that the hospital had asked the patients who had fully recovered to go home after Otti made the pledge as they were convinced that the former banker would redeem his pledge.
