In a bid to reposition the Peoples Democratic Party for future challenges, a United States of America non-profit organization of dedicated members of the party, Diasporans for PDP, has called on the Acting National Chairman of the party, Umar Damagum to waste no further time in convening a mini convention to fill vacant national offices.

In a letter addressed to Damagum, Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Bala Mohammed, Acting Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, Adolphus Wabara, National Assembly PDP members and other party stakeholders, titled “Request for a mini convention to fill vacant positions and the pivotal role of National Working Committee in preparation for the 2027 general election,” the group emphasized the need to strengthen PDP nationwide and forge a formidable front for the big test ahead.

The letter jointly signed by the founder and national chairperson of the group,Mrs Victoria Pamugo; Publicity Secretary (Canada), Chidi Igwe; Farouk Suleiman (United Kingdom); Mrs Theodora Igwe (USA); Bilyaminu Romo (UK), Omoniyi Taiwo (Australia) and Emmanuel Amaefule (Austria) read in part, “We, the undersigned, representing Diasporans for PDP, a US-based non-profit organization of dedicated members of the PDP living abroad, in conjunction with We Stand With PDP National Orientation Platform, write to request the organization of a Mini Convention in 2024 to fill critical vacant positions within the party leadership.

“Submitted in partnership with We Stand With PDP National Orientation Platform, this request reflects a united front of concerned and committed PDP members both within and outside Nigeria. Additionally, we wish to underscore the significant and pivotal role that the National Working Committee will play as we collectively prepare for the 2027 general elections.”

The group listed the vacant positions to include the Offices of the National Chairman, National Woman Leader and Deputy National Woman Leader.

Justifying the call for the mini election, the letter further read, “Our request for a mini convention in 2024 is rooted in the understanding of the indispensable role the NWC plays in steering the party’s affairs, particularly as we stand on the cusp of the 2027 general elections.

“Filling these positions immediately will strengthen our party and provide the strong leadership needed in order to get out of the current disheartening situation. The importance of this convention is multifaceted and resonates across various aspects crucial to the party’s success.

Damagum became Acting National Chairman of the party following the suspension of Iyorchia Ayu by his Gboko ward for alleged anti-party activities but has struggled to provide any meaningful leadership almost a year in the saddle.

As a result, the Diasporans for PDP in rooting for Ayu’s successor said, “The National Chairman serves as the
lynchpin for effective governance within the party. Their role is not only symbolic but integral in providing strategic direction, cohesion, and stability to the party.

“A stable leadership is paramount as we approach the complex challenges of the 2027 elections, and the absence of a National Chairman poses a risk to our ability to make timely decisions and navigate the intricate political terrain with sagacity.

On gender Inclusivity and representation,  the group stressed that “The positions of National Women Leader and Deputy National Women Leader hold significant importance in promoting gender inclusivity within the party’s leadership.

“Filling these positions through a democratic means will exemplify the PDP’s unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusiveness, ensuring that the perspectives and concerns of women are not just acknowledged but are actively involved in shaping the party’s policies and direction.”

It further highlighted the place of party unity and cohesion for a united front, saying, “A complete and cohesive NWC is the bedrock of party unity. It provides a structured platform for members to collaborate, strategize, and work towards common goals. The unity forged within the NWC radiates throughout the entire party, creating a robust foundation and a united front as we prepare to navigate the dynamic landscape leading up to the 2027 elections.”

The letter further read, “A well-rounded and dynamic leadership is paramount for the party’s success in future elections. The mini convention to fill these vacant positions will allow the PDP to present a united and formidable front to the electorate. The NWC, through strategic leadership, will be instrumental in developing and executing innovative strategies that resonate with voters and address the pressing issues facing the nation.

“Filling vacant positions promptly demonstrates the party’s responsiveness to the needs and expectations of its members. This, in turn, boosts morale and confidence among party members, fostering an environment of dedication and active participation.

“A motivated membership, supported by a capable NWC, is an invaluable asset as we gear up for the challenges and opportunities presented by the 2027 elections.

“As we approach the 2027 general elections, we envision a strong and effective NWC that will lay a strong foundation for victory and play an indispensable role in strategic planning and visionary Leadership, developing comprehensive strategies that address the diverse challenges posed by the electoral landscape and formulating a visionary roadmap that positions the party as a dynamic force capable of navigating the complexities of the political environment.

“It is imperative that the National Working Committee, the PDP National Executive Committee, the Board of Trustees, the PDP Governors’ Forum, the PDP National Legislative Caucuses, and PDP Critical Stakeholders listen to the voice of party members, address issues of disunity in our party, provide for a strong and transparent leadership, and share our unwavering commitment to the principles of democracy, inclusivity, and effective governance within the PDP,” it added.
