Tension has again engulfed parts of Benue State following a renewed attack by suspected armed herdsmen in Mbalom and Mbasombo council wards of Gwer-East Local Government Area, leading to the death of four individuals, including a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Akaabo Johnson.
According to sources, the assailants stormed the communities around 4:30 pm on Tuesday, unleashing sporadic gunfire that claimed the lives of the victims and caused panic among residents.
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer of the Benue State Command, CSP Sewuese Anene, for official confirmation were unsuccessful, as calls and messages went unanswered.
However, the Chairman of Gwer-East LGA, Hon. Timothy Adi, confirmed the incident during a telephone conversation with Pointblanknews.com on Wednesday, May 7, 2025. He described the assault as unprovoked and condemned it in strong terms, while extending condolences to the bereaved families and the entire Gwer-East community.
“The bodies of the victims have been evacuated and deposited at St. Gregory Hospital morgue,” Adi disclosed.
The chairman also lauded the swift deployment of security personnel to the affected areas, noting that their presence had helped stabilize the situation and prevent further bloodshed.
“We are working closely with the military and other security agencies to safeguard our communities and secure the borderlines. I appreciate Governor Hyacinth Alia for his immediate intervention, which made the deployment possible,” Adi stated.
He further urged residents, especially the youth, to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious movement or persons to the appropriate authorities.
“This is a difficult time, but we must stand together. Fear must not divide us. Governor Alia is doing everything possible to bring an end to these senseless attacks. I also commend the Nigerian Army and other operatives for their role in restoring calm to the area,” he added.
Adi assured constituents that the local government council remains committed to ensuring the safety and peace of all communities within its jurisdiction
