Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, on Tuesday warned the Federal Government that it would be held accountable should any harm befalls former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, following reports that he suffered a nosebleed while in detention.
Describing the report as disturbing and inconsistent with democratic norms, Atiku said any situation that puts the former governor’s health at risk should worry all Nigerians.
He noted that El-Rufai’s wellbeing remains a serious concern to those close to him and to citizens who value the rule of law.
In the statement, Atiku stressed that the circumstances surrounding the alleged detention must not be shrouded in secrecy, insisting that the public has a right to know the facts. “openness is essential to prevent misinformation and speculation,” he said.
He urged the Federal Government to disclose without delay which agency is responsible for holding El-Rufai, whether the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), the State Security Service (SSS), or any other security outfit, and to clarify the legal basis for such action.
He added that the government must demonstrate respect for constitutional provisions and ensure that no individual is subjected to arbitrary treatment under any guise.
As of press time, none of the security agencies mentioned had issued an official statement confirming El-Rufai’s alleged detention or addressing reports about his health condition.
