The Obidient Movement, the support base of former Anambra State Governor, Mr Peter Obi has moved to calm rising tension among its supporters following mounting speculation that Obi, may soon defect from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to a new political coalition reportedly aligning with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a press statement shared by the movement’s spokesperson, Yunusa Tanko, on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, the group acknowledged concerns triggered by ongoing political consultations and shifting alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Titled “Reassuring The Public: A Call For Calm and Patience,” the statement sought to douse anxiety within the Obidient base, both in Nigeria and across the diaspora, amid intense pressure and speculation over Obi’s next political move.
“The Obidient Movement acknowledges the growing concerns and widespread reports regarding recent political developments in the political landscape,” the statement read, pointing to “evolving engagements with current and potential partners.”
The development comes against the backdrop of deep political realignments within Nigeria’s opposition space, where talks of coalition-building have intensified. Sources within the movement and allied political circles suggest that Obi is actively exploring platforms that could offer a more viable pathway to power in 2027, amid internal challenges within the ADC and broader opposition fragmentation.
While no formal announcement has been made, the consultations referenced in the statement are interpreted as high negotiations that could culminate in a major political shift.
Confirming this, the movement stated that Obi “is currently engaged in extensive, high-level consultations with key stakeholders, political allies, and aligned movements,” adding that the discussions are focused on “determining the most strategic and effective path forward in the best interest of the Nigerian people.”
Despite the uncertainty, the Obidient Movement emphasized that its guiding principles remain intact. “As a movement founded on integrity, accountability, and active citizen participation, we remain dedicated to ensuring that every decision taken reflects our values and long-term vision for the country,” the statement noted.
The group also issued a direct appeal to its supporters to resist speculation and remain disciplined as events unfold.
“We urge all Obidients to remain calm, patient, and focused. Do not be swayed by speculative reports,” it said, while assuring that Obi “remains fully committed to this mission and will, in due course, formally address the Obidient Movement and the general public.”
The reassurance comes at a moment when political permutations ahead of 2027 are beginning to take shape.
For now, the movement is betting on unity as its strongest asset. “Our strength lies in our unity and focus,” the statement concluded, urging supporters to “remain steadfast as we await further communication.”
While the final decision rests with Obi, the tone of the statement suggests that a strategic realignment is not only under consideration but may be imminent.
