Former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has credited legendary Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho for shaping much of his managerial philosophy following their successful years together at Stamford Bridge.
Lampard, now in charge of Coventry City F.C., spoke about the influence Mourinho had on him while discussing the transition from his celebrated playing career into football management.
The former England midfielder enjoyed tremendous success during Mourinho’s first stint at Chelsea F.C., helping the Blues win several major domestic honours as the Portuguese coach transformed the club into one of Europe’s dominant sides.
Lampard said Mourinho’s greatest strength was his ability to instil confidence in his players, noting that the Portuguese manager created an atmosphere where the team believed it could overcome any opponent.
“He gave players belief and knew exactly how to get the best out of individuals and the team,” Lampard said as he reflected on their successful time together at Chelsea.
The Coventry manager also praised Mourinho’s communication and man-management style, describing him as a coach who demanded high standards while still knowing how to keep players motivated and focused.
Since retiring from professional football, Lampard has gone on to manage several clubs, including Derby County F.C., Chelsea F.C. and Everton F.C. before his current role at Coventry City.
Mourinho, regarded as one of football’s most successful managers, has won major honours across Europe with clubs such as Inter Milan, Real Madrid CF, Chelsea and Manchester United F.C., including multiple league titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies.
