Argentina’s President, Javier Milei, has insisted that the world is “jealous” of Argentina despite the country’s heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, arguing that the South American nation remains admired globally and excels “at almost everything.”
Milei made the remarks as Argentina grappled with the end of its World Cup title defense after losing to a disciplined Spanish side that denied La Albiceleste a second consecutive world title.
The Argentine leader, who said he watched the match from home because of a long-held superstition, dismissed suggestions that the defeat had diminished Argentina’s standing on the global stage.
Speaking during an interview with Argentina’s LN+ television network on Friday, July 24, excerpts of which were widely circulated on social media, Milei said Argentina’s prominence naturally attracts envy from other nations.
“The problem with Argentina is that we are flashy, we don’t go unnoticed, people are jealous of us, and we are good at almost everything,” Milei said. “I’m sorry, but someone had to say it.”
His comments came amid intense scrutiny of Argentina’s performance in the final, with analysts questioning the team’s inability to impose itself against Spain. Argentina managed only two shots throughout the match as Spain’s organized defense and clinical display secured a narrow victory and the country’s first World Cup title in years.
Argentina entered the final as defending champions after lifting the trophy in Qatar in 2022 under the leadership of Lionel Messi. Expectations were high that the Albiceleste would successfully defend the title, but Spain’s disciplined approach frustrated the South Americans, who failed to find an equalizer after conceding the decisive goal.
Milei also suggested that key refereeing decisions worked against Argentina and may have influenced the outcome of the match, although he did not identify the specific incidents he believed affected the result.
The controversy surrounding the president deepened after he mistakenly published a pre-scheduled social media post celebrating an Argentine victory and declaring a national holiday before quickly deleting it.
The message, prepared ahead of the final, was removed once the error was noticed, but screenshots had already spread widely across social media platforms, drawing ridicule from critics and football fans alike.
Many questioned the wisdom of preparing a victory announcement before the match had been played, while others mocked the embarrassing blunder as Argentina came to terms with its defeat.
The loss triggered emotional scenes across Argentina, where millions had hoped to celebrate another World Cup triumph. Instead, public attention quickly shifted from events on the pitch to Milei’s post-match comments and the viral circulation of the premature victory message.
Away from football, Milei has remained one of Latin America’s most polarizing political figures. Earlier this year, he renewed Argentina’s claim to the Falkland Islands, declaring that the disputed territory “will always be Argentine” despite Britain’s continued administration of the islands.
While Spain’s victory brought an end to Argentina’s bid to retain the World Cup, the aftermath was dominated by Milei’s defiant rhetoric, his criticism of the officiating, and the ill-timed publication of a pre-written victory message—controversies that ensured the conversation extended well beyond the final whistle.
