Anthony Joshua delivered one of the most dramatic victories of his career on Saturday night, overcoming two first-round knockdowns to stop Albania’s Kristian Prenga in the second round of their heavyweight clash in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in an emotional return to the ring following the December car accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami.
The remarkable comeback not only marked a triumphant return for the former two-time world heavyweight champion but also reignited hopes of a long-awaited blockbuster showdown with fellow British heavyweight Tyson Fury.
Joshua’s comeback could scarcely have begun in more dramatic fashion.
Just 20 seconds into the opening round, Prenga stunned the packed Jeddah Superdome by landing a crushing uppercut that sent Joshua crashing to the canvas. Competing for the first time since the tragic accident that claimed the lives of his close friends, the former champion struggled to contain his emotions as he reflected on the painful months he had spent away from boxing.
“This is what champions do. We get knocked down and we get back up,” Joshua said.
He dedicated the victory to the memory of Ayodele and Ghami, saying their deaths had given him a renewed appreciation for life and strengthened his resolve to persevere through adversity. Joshua also thanked his family, trainers and supporters for standing by him during one of the most challenging periods of his life.
The dramatic victory has immediately intensified anticipation for a long-discussed clash with Tyson Fury, who also returned to winning ways after defeating Poland’s Mariusz Wach a day earlier.
Promoter Eddie Hearn revealed after the bout that negotiations for the all-British heavyweight showdown were already at an advanced stage, fueling optimism that one of boxing’s biggest dream fights could finally take place later this year.
For years, Joshua and Fury have stood as the defining figures of British heavyweight boxing, but repeated negotiations for a superfight have collapsed over contractual disputes, scheduling complications and conflicting title commitments.
With both men now returning to the winner’s circle, confidence is growing that the long-awaited collision may finally become reality.
Although Joshua’s vulnerability in the opening round is certain to reignite debate about his durability against elite opposition, his courage, fighting spirit and devastating finishing power ultimately stole the headlines in Jeddah.
