The Delta State Government has condemned the violence that erupted at the All Progressives Congress (APC) Delta Central leaders and stakeholders’ meeting held at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Conference Centre in Effurun, directing security agencies to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible.
The directive was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, who described the incident as disturbing, unacceptable and inconsistent with the state’s commitment to peace and public order.
Aniagwu said the government was deeply concerned by videos circulating on social media showing scenes of violence, particularly the assault on Simon Mudi, Mr. Tempo and journalist Kofa Kingsley, who was reportedly covering the event in the course of his professional duties.
According to him, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration has ordered security agencies to ensure that everyone involved in the attacks is brought to justice.
“Such behaviour will not be allowed to thrive in Delta State. All those involved will face the full weight of the law,” Aniagwu said.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining peace, law and order across the state, stressing that violence would not be tolerated regardless of the identities or affiliations of those involved.
The incident has attracted widespread public attention following the circulation of videos showing bloodied victims and chaotic scenes at the venue.
Among those reportedly injured was Mr. Tempo, said to be an aide to Governor Oborevwori.
Unconfirmed reports alleged that he was attacked after refusing to stop praising President Bola Tinubu during the meeting. Witnesses claimed he was assaulted while attempting to leave the venue.
The incident has also generated criticism on social media, with some commentators questioning the alleged availability of alcoholic drinks at the event. They suggested that intoxication may have contributed to the violence, citing videos that appeared to show numerous empty bottles scattered around the venue.
As of Wednesday evening, Mr. Tempo and other injured persons were reportedly receiving medical treatment, while security agencies had yet to confirm any arrests.
The Delta State Government urged residents to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands, assuring the public that security agencies would conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
