A United States-based journalist and former best graduating student of Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, Neema Ebeledike, has instituted a N200,000 prize to reward academic excellence in the institution’s Department of Mass Communication.

The Neema Ebeledike Prize for the Best Graduating Mass Communication Student also comes with a scholarship and fellowship guidebook designed to help students identify and pursue educational and professional opportunities abroad. Adeola Holo is the inaugural recipient of the award.

Ebeledike, who graduated from the university in 2020, said the initiative was inspired by her experience navigating the academic demands of studying Mass Communication and her desire to recognise students who demonstrate exceptional academic performance.

She noted that the discipline requires strong writing skills, analytical thinking, creativity and the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively, making outstanding academic performance particularly demanding.

“People often celebrate excellent results without fully understanding what it takes to achieve them. I know firsthand how difficult it is to graduate with an outstanding result, let alone emerge as the best in a department like Mass Communication, where so much of your academic performance depends on writing, critical thinking, analysis, creativity and assessments that do not always have one straightforward answer,” she said.

“Behind every excellent result are sacrifices people may never see. There are sleepless nights, countless assignments, moments of self-doubt and the discipline to keep showing up and giving your best. I want this prize to recognise that effort.”

Ebeledike explained that Mass Communication assessments often go beyond questions with predetermined answers, requiring students to demonstrate originality, interpret information, exercise sound judgment and defend their ideas.

The university’s Registrar, Dr Akintola, expressed appreciation to Ebeledike for the gesture, describing it as a welcome contribution to the institution.

“The University appreciates your generosity and kind support, and prays that the Redeemer Himself will continue to prosper you on all sides. Amen,” Akintola said.

Since graduating from Redeemer’s University, Ebeledike has built a career spanning journalism, documentary filmmaking, photography and multimedia storytelling.

She holds a master’s degree in Journalism from the University of California, Berkeley, and currently works as a multimedia journalist with The Sacramento Observer in California, United States.
