‘Why Obasanjo Visited Jonathan’

by Our Reporter

President Goodluck Jonathan today hosted former President Olusegun and President Boni Yayi of Benin to discuss the armed conflict in Mali, Pointblanknews.com has learnt.

This revelation contrasts with reports in a section of the media that Obasanjo’s visit may not be unconnected with yesterday’s splintering of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Sources close to one of the parties told Pointblanknews.com that the meeting had been scheduled “weeks before”. And had nothing to do with the party’s special national convention.

One principal source insisted that Mali, and not PDP, formed the plank of Obasanjo’s meeting with Jonathan.

“Remember that Presidents Jonathan and Yayi early in the year graced the launch of ex-President Obasanjo’s foundation in London. So, this isn’t the first time the three leaders would be meeting,” offered the source.

Obasanjo’s vice, Atiku Abubakar and six PDP-elected governors had Saturday stormed out of Eagle Square, venue of the party convention.

Citing several infringements of the PDP constitution by national chairman Bamanga Tukur, Atiku and the governors announced the formation of a splinter PDP.
