No fewer than 5,000 members from the All Progressives Grand Alliance APGA,
in Anambra State have defected to the People’s Democratic Party, PDP,
saying that the decision was informed by the undemocratic posture of the
leadership of the party.
Mrs. Uche Ekwunife, a former APGA State Women Leader, while receiving the
5000 former members of APGA into PDP, applauded their bold step, stating
that the PDP is the only political party that accommodates the interest of
the Ndigbo and is capable of developing the South East parts of the
country.
Among those who defected to PDP where the aggrieved chairmanship and
councillorship aspirants whose names were allegedly exchanged with those
that did not contest in the party primaries.
At a mammoth rally held in Agulu, at Agulu at Anaocha Local Government
Areas, Mr. Peter Obi’s home town, all the executive members of Obi‘s
cabinet also joined the PDP as well as the Director General of Governor
Willie Obiano’s Campaign Organization, Barrister Jeo Martins Uzodike.
Ekwunife, who also spoke during the rally organized by the former members
of APGA in honour of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP senatorial
candidate for Anambra central senatorial zone, said they decided to dump
the party due to noticeable ills bedeviling the party.
Mrs. Edith Nwokedi, a former APGA member, said that with the recent
development in the party, they opted to defect to the PDP which she
described as the mainstream of Nigerian politics.
“We decided to dump APGA because it has become very clear that the party
has no vision and has lost its value.
“The leadership of the party has been seriously bastardized and we have
also seen in Mrs. Uche Ekwunife, the passion to bring developmental
strides to the people of the zone.
The former Director General of Governor Willie Obiano campaign
organization, Chief Joe-Martins Uzodike, in his remarks said the
leadership of APGA had made the people of the state to lose interest in
the party, hence the mass defection.
He said the persistent crisis rocking the party, was too toxic to stay
connected to and as a result, they decided to move to another party that
had the interest of the people at heart, which is the PDP.
