The Anambra- state indigenes in Malaysia made the disclosure on Thursday at a press conference in Awka, the Anambra Stats capital.
Speaking through their leader, Okwunwanne Mmaduka, under the aegis of Anambra State Welfare Association Malaysia,
said the development had become a “huge concern, embarrassing and too unbearable to them”.
Mmaduka said, they had planned advocacy visits to stakeholders in the state to let them know of the situation over there.
” We’ll meet the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe and other monarchs, governor Willie Obiano and other stakeholders in the state on how to stop the trend” he said.
According to him, they received over 20 complaints every week on the activities of Anambra women, who are sex workers in Malaysia, and many of them had lost their lives in the trade .
” We have rescued most of them and sent them back to Nigeria, while some others have been sent to school in Malaysia by us. The trend is giving us bad name in that country.
“ASWAM is disturbed by the increasing cases of Anambra State women and girls in Malaysia falling victims of sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation ”
“”ASWAM is therefore, employing community-based and state-wide campaigns to combat the menace.
“We are taking the campaigns to families, communities and traditional institutions here in Anambra State.
“We are raising awareness among our young people, parents, government and the public on the dangers therein ”
“All hands must be on deck in this fight” , he stated.
