There was confusion in Umuahia, Abia State, Friday, as gunmen robbed a Chinese man of an undisclosed amount of cash and killed a policeman escorting him along Mission Hill road.
The gunmen are believed to have trailed the Chinese national from a second generation bank where he made some withdrawal along Aba road to the Mission Hill area.
Sources told Pointblanknews.com that the gunmen may have even trailed the Chinese expatriate from Aba where he does business.
The Policeman engaged the gunmen in exchange of gunfire. But in the ensuing gun duel; the policeman was shot dead while the driver of the vehicle was hit on the leg.
Spokesman of the Abia State Police Command, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna who confirmed the incident as an armed robbery attcak, said the gunmen also made away with the deceased policeman’s AK-47 rifle. The PPRO said investigation has begun on the matter.
Earlier, residents and shop owners had fled to safety as the gunmen fired sporadic shots. Most of them feared that bandits had stormed the city or the office of the Correctional Service located along Mission Hill.
Banks also shut their doors fearing attack by bandits. There was no security agent on sight throughout the period the attack lasted. The streets of Umuahia were still deserted an hour after the incident.
