As more politicians defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) across the country, national leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has accused the defectors of turning their backs on the ideals of the party that elected them into office, describing it as highest form of betrayal.
This is just as he pointed out that those who abandoned the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) after the 2023 election will regret and pay for it in 2027.
The ruling party and the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have both seen high-profile exits and fresh alignments, creating a fluid political environment. Regional dynamics, ethnic considerations, and the struggle for power rotation are further fueling defections, as politicians position themselves for influence and relevance in the evolving political order.
Addressing a gathering of supporters from Takai Local Government Area who refused to join the APC at his Miller Road residence in Kano on Friday, Kwankwaso commended his supporters for their steadfastness in the party and for rejecting all the inducements from the ruling party.
He said, “Kano South is a lesson. Voters rejected spaghetti, N200 and Atamfa (wrappers) and were patient to vote for the NNPP.
“But those who won the election among us decided to abandon the masses and join those who do not have the masses at heart but are only after what they will get for themselves and their families.
“There is no worse political sin than leaving the party that gave you the opportunity and support, but later you abandoned the party. This is the highest level of betrayal.”
The former governor commended the returning members for having the courage to retrace their steps, describing their decision as a reaffirmation of loyalty to the movement. He also warned that those who abandoned the Kwankwasiyya cause would come to regret their actions in due course.
