Army Retires Senior Officers on Trial over Defence Contracts, 2015 General Elections

The Nigerian Army has announced the retirement of senior officers, some of
whom are still on trial over defence contracts. A statement issued
Saturday by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col Sani Usman,
said the retirements followed the approval of the army council.
He said the retirement was based on service exigencies.
“The Army wishes to inform the general public that quite a number of
senior officers of the Nigerian Army were retired from service yesterday.
“Those retired were mainly some major-generals, brigadiers-general,
colonels, lieutenant-colonels and a major.
“Their retirement was based on service exigencies,’’ the statement said.
Usman said the retirements were connected with the Presidential Committee
investigating defence contracts noting that some of the officers had been
arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) while
others were connected with investigation into partisanship of  some of the
officers during the 2015 general electio
