Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar has launched a scathing critique of President Bola Tinubu-led administration, citing a “failing security architecture” that has left Nigerians vulnerable to unmitigated violence.
His condemnation comes amidst a backdrop of escalating insecurity across the nation, highlighted by the recent brutal killing of 16 northerners in Uromi, Edo State and the masacre in Plateau State.
Abubakar, expressing his deep concern on his X (formerly Twitter) Handle, saying, “The failure of Bola Tinubu’s security architecture has now become an endemic nationwide phenomenon with repeated killings, most of which do not even make the headlines. Nigerians are now being forced to get use to such news of wanton killings, and I again offer my condolences to the bereaved communities of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State and the affected families.
“I wish to restate my counsel to the Tinubu-led FFederal Government  to reconfigure its security architecture to meet the needs of protecting the lives and properties of our people.”
Atiku had earlier expressed sadness over the Uromi massacre, where 16 individuals of northern extraction were reportedly killed, noting that the  incident underscores the severity of the security challenges facing Nigeria.
According to him, “I am deeply saddened by reports of the tragic killing of some hunters in Edo State. My heartfelt condolences go out to their families and loved ones.
“This unfortunate incident demands a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation to uncover and ensure that those responsible are brought to book.
“The protection of innocent lives must remain paramount, and I urge the authorities to act swiftly and decisively to prevent a recurrence of jungle justice.”
The cumulative effect of these security challenges has created a climate of fear and uncertainty, prompting calls for urgent and decisive action from the government.
Atiku’s statement reflects the growing public frustration with the perceived ineffectiveness of the current security strategies.
The northeast region continues to be plagued by the activities of terrorist groups, resulting in widespread displacement and loss of lives. Bandit groups terrorise communities in the northwest and north-central regions and other parts of the country, engaging in mass kidnappings for ransom and cattle rustling.
Clashes between nomadic herders and settled farmers over land and resources have escalated into violent conflicts, particularly in the Middle Belt region.
