Atiku’ll Return to PDP, Damagum Assures

The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Damagum, has dismissed the recent resignation of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the party as inconsequential, saying the Wazirin Adamawa will again return to the party.
Reacting to Atiku’s decision to quit the party and align with a new political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections, Damagum described the move as neither new nor surprising, insisting that the party is confident the former presidential candidate will eventually return.
“This is not the first time he’s leaving. We are used to it. And we are also expecting him to come back,” Damagum told journalists in Abuja.
He emphasized that Atiku’s exit would not destabilize the PDP, adding that the party remains strong and focused.
“His exit is no threat to the PDP. The party remains strong and unshaken,” he stated.
Atiku, who has been a key figure in Nigeria’s political landscape for decades, has a yo-yo history, always  leaving and always returning to the PDP.
He first left the party in 2006, joined the defunct Action Congress (AC), then returned in 2009. He left again in 2013 to co-found the All Progressives Congress (APC) and returned in 2017 to contest for the presidency under the PDP in both 2019 and 2023.
Damagum noted that the PDP is well acquainted with such political movements and remains open to reconciliation.
He  however  warned that the party would no longer tolerate internal sabotage or deliberate attempts by any member to undermine its image.
“We are the most accommodating party in Nigeria. But there must be discipline,” he warned, hinting that sanctions may be imposed on members who engage in anti-party activities.
Atiku’s latest exit comes amid shifting alliances and political repositioning as the 2027 general elections approach. Despite his departure, the PDP insists it will continue to strengthen its structure and move forward with or without him.
Atiku is yet to officially join the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Although, many believe he is the brain behind the brand and that he would likely contest the 2027 Presidency on it’s banner. The days and weeks ahead will reveal a lot across the political spectrum.
