Insurgents believed to be members of Boko Haram Monday morning launched a major military offensive against Damaturu, capital of Yobe State.
Security sources said the insurgents had Friday begun building up bases around the city’s borders, and that the military high command was notified.
“Early Monday morning, the BHT (Boko Haram Terrorists” began an artillery campaign against our soldiers,” a military source told Pointblanknews.com.
According to the source, sounds of heavy artillery boomed as soldiers battled to push back the insurgents.
Some residents of the city who managed to escape described the fighting as “very serious.”
