President Bola Tinubu has announced a major shake-up in the nation’s military hierarchy, appointing new Service Chiefs in what the Presidency describes as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture.
There are speculations that the development comes against the backdrop of recent rumours of an alleged coup plot, which the Federal Government has strongly denied, insisting that the country’s democratic institutions remain stable and secure.
According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media & Public Communication, Sunday Dare on Friday, the following changes have been made:
Olufemi Oluyede is now the new Chief of Defence Staff, replacing Christopher Gwabin Musa.
W. Shaibu becomes the new Chief of Army Staff.
S. K. Aneke is appointed Chief of Air Staff.
I. Abbas takes over as Chief of Naval Staff.
The Chief of Defence Intelligence, E. A. P. Undiendeye, retains his position.
Note that the outgoing service chiefs were appointed on the 19th of June, 2023.
President Tinubu expressed profound appreciation to the outgoing Service Chiefs for their “patriotic service and dedicated leadership.” He also charged the newly appointed military leaders to “justify the confidence reposed in them” by demonstrating professionalism, vigilance, and unity in the discharge of their duties. “All appointments take immediate effect,” the statement concluded.
