The Founder of Oodua People’s Congress, Dr. Frederick Fasehun, has called for the scrapping of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.
Also civil rights activist, Bamidele Aturu while also calling for the disbandment of the NGF, described it as an ” immoral assembly”
Fasehun said the NGF lacked any democratic, nationalistic or progressive value.
In a statement on Tuesday to mark Nigeria’s Democracy Day on Wednesday, Fasehun said a lot of injustice was being done to the memories of the country’s democracy matyrs.
He said several steps being taken by politicians do not give befitting remembrance to democracy matyrs such as Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola and Major General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua.
Fasehun said in the statement: “If 36 esteemed states governors cannot manage a small and exclusive election amongst themselves, how can they supervise free and fair elections involving 70 million voters during the 2015 general elections?”
Fasehun described the NGF as a cult with which the governors backed the removal of fuel subsidy and other sundry unfriendly policies to the masses.
He said: “Moreover, the NGF is not a disciplined organisation. Its members not only lack respect for the person and office of the President, but also work against the spirit and letter of the Nigerian Constitution.”
He called for the convocation of a Sovereign National Conference as a way out of the country’s numerous problems.
He said: “The democracy we run today is the worst in Africa, and it is a shame that it does not match what obtains in Ghana, South Africa and even Liberia. I can tell you confidently that this was not what we had in mind when we risked our lives, our limbs and our livelihoods against the Military.”
