Wife of Nigeria’s President, Aisha Buhari has denied report by the Peoples
Democratic Party that she is involved in illegal foreign exchange dealings
with the central Bank of Nigeria.
The PDP on its Twitter handle Saturday claimed that Aisha Buhari was a
beneficiary of dollar allocations from the CBN, alleging that she got the
dollars below the official exchange rate of N197. Aisha’s company was also
accused of collecting $22million at the rate of N185 and then selling it
off at N362 same day.
The first lady on her twitter handle on Sunday denied the allegations
threatening to take action against the PDP
“Be advised, any further attempt to malign the person of the Wife of the
President will be dealt with according to the law. This is grounds for a
lawsuit on defamation of character.”
“Making false and unfounded allegations without proof just to incite
Nigerians on social media is wrong.”
Meanwhile, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said it does not sell
foreign exchange to individuals or groups, clarifying that it sells forex
in wholesale to banks who in turn resell to their customers at their
discretion.
According to the CBN’s official twitter post, @cenbank never sold dollars
at N185 – $1. Devaluations were from N155 to N167 and N197.
Below are some of the CBN tweet
2). CBN only does wholesale allocation to banks (Selling dollars to banks
at wholesale). Only banks can determine customers they sell to.
3. That’s how the Wholesale Dutch Auction System works. @cenbank does not
sell dollars to any individual or group directly.
4. Banks publish final recipients of dollars every week in all major
newspapers as directed by the #CBN, so as to promote transparency.
5. So the PDP is only being mischievous and silly. What’s the big revelation?
6. How did PDP know how much the recipients sold the dollars in the open
market even if they ended up doing so?
7. Simply another smear campaign by Gov. Emefiele’s detractors to connect
his name to everything wrong, both imagined, fabricated, or real
8. As Gov. Oshiomole aptly and succinctly posited recently, these faceless
persons will be unmasked soon as “palm wine drinkers!”
