Buhari died in a clinic in London, United Kingdom, at the age of 82 after a brief illness on Sunday.
The death of the former President was announced by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu on Sunday via his X handle.
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” he wrote.
Following the demise of Buhari, President Bola Tinubu has announced the passing of his predecessor, President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Special Adviser to the President, (Information and Strategy) Bayo Onanuga in his X handle on Sunday, said that funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming hours, as tributes begin to pour in from across the country.
“President Tinubu has spoken with Mrs Aishat Buhari, the former President’s widow and offered his deep condolences.
“President Tinubu has also ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima to proceed to the United Kingdom to accompany President Muhammadu Buhari’s body back to Nigeria.
“President Tinubu has ordered flags at half-staff as a mark of respect for the departed leader” he wrote.
Buhari, who had been battling an undisclosed ailment, was recently discharged from an intensive care unit in London, according to family sources.
He was said to have taken ill during a routine medical visit abroad and had remained under observation in the weeks leading up to his passing.
Though details of the illness were not made public, the former president was believed to be recuperating until his condition took a turn.
A retired major general, Buhari served first as military head of state from 1983 to 1985, before returning as an elected president in 2015.
His two-term civilian presidency, which ended in 2023, was defined by a sweeping anti-corruption agenda, an economic reform programme, and sustained efforts to address insecurity across the country.
