I influenced my wife’s judicial decisions, says Senator Bulkachuwa

by Our Reporter
Senator Adamu Muhammad Bulkachuwa who represented Bauchi north senatorial district in the Nigerian Senate, has confessed to exploiting his marriage to Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwa, a former President of the Nigeria Court of Appeal for favorable judgments for himself and his colleagues and other politicians.
The senator stated this during the Senate Valedictory last Saturday.

He admitted to encroaching into his wife’s job to manipulate justice in favour of some senators.

Senator Bulkachuwa, the spouse of Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwa, former President of the Nigeria Court of Appeal, was elected senator during the 2019 general elections on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

At the session, Bulkachuwa said “…Particularly my wife whose freedom and independence were encroached upon when she was in office. She has been tolerant and accepted my encroachment and extended it to my colleagues.”

The Senate president, Ahmad Lawan, however, quickly stopped him, saying he does not think it was appropriate for the senator to make such comments.

He said: “Distinguished Senator, I don’t think that is the right route to go”

Recall that the main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, had in 2019, filed an application asking Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa to recuse herself from the presidential election tribunal hearing their petition, against the election of President Muhammadu Buahri.

A motion filed by one Emmanuel Agbo, Atiku and the PDP had asked for an order to ensure that Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa recused herself from further sitting of the tribunal or participating in the proceedings in the petition and be replaced by another Justice of the Appeal Court.

The grounds for the appeal include that Justice Bulkachuwa was the wife of Mr Adamu Bulkachuwa a prominent card-carrying member of the All Progressive Congress and Senator-elect for Bauchi north senatorial district which was a political party involved in the suit.
