Most School Teachers Are Illiterates; Says Amaechi

by Our Reporter

Rivers state governor, Rt. Hon.Chibuike Amaechi says most school teachers in the state are illiterates who could not spell words correctly.

The governor who spoke at the 2012 World Teachers Day celebrations  said  it is shocking to observe that  most teachers in government owned schools could not spell words correctly and wondered  the quality  of knowledge such teachers impart on students.

“I visited Community Secondary School, Rumukwurushi where I met teachers who could not spell words correctly. The policy of this administration is that all teachers must be re-certified of their qualifications. What you studied in 1979 is what you are teaching students in 2012.Are you being fair?

“That is why we said, go and write the qualification examination. With this, we will be able to access you if the NCE is still current, so that while the students are reading, the teachers are also reading,” Amaechi said.

The governor promised that incentives would be given to teachers to encourage them, assuring that funds would also be made available to schools for the smooth running of academic activities.

He further urged the teachers to be ICT compliant, adding that teachers who are not ICT compliant would be asked to leave the school system.
