Nigerian soldiers resigning over planned deployment for war

Some Nigerians soldiers are secretly applying for medical leaves while others are tendering their resignations following plans by the authorities to deploy them for various security tasks.

A memo dated July 28, 2023 obtained by our correspondent, titled “Approval for Voluntary/Medical Discharge, First and Second Quarters” signed by one Lt. Col M, Haruna revealed the development.

The memo revealed that Warrant Officer Abayomi Omotosho and 18 others had their applications approved.

The memo read, “I  conveyed the Chief of Army Staff’s approval for the voluntary/medical discharge of the above named SNCO and 18 others listed at Annex A. The soldiers are to proceed on terminal leave with effect from 15 Jan 24 while their disengagement dates take effect from 15 Feb 24 in accordance with the Nigeria Army Administrative Policies and Procedures Revised (March 2023) No 36 Paragraphs 3 and 4.

“Accordingly. I am directed to request you that release the affected soldiers to report to AHQ DPM with their unit service documents and a current photograph for documentation not later than 15 Oct 23. I am to add that you kindly ensure the following:

“All forms of military controlled items, arms, ammunition and items of combat kits are recovered from them prior to their disengagement date and certify that they are properly de-kitted.

“They complete all necessary documents for withdrawal from the Nigeria Welfare Insurance Scheme, BENFUND contributions and National Mortgage Contributions.”
