The Osun Commissioner for Health, Mrs Temitope Ilori, has warned residents against self-medication, saying it could be harmful to the body system.
The commissioner gave the warning while addressing market women at Alamisi market in Ikirun as part of ongoing activities lined up for the 2012 United Nations Anti-Drug Abuse Campaign.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the commissioner was represented by Mr Dele Okedele, the Director of Pharmaceutical Services in the ministry.
The commissioner said a report had confirmed that self-medication could cause irreparable damage in the human body, stressing that avoidance of such habit was advisable.
She called on residents to always consult medical personnel in health facilities rather than patronising quack doctors or untrained health workers.
Ilori said the ministry would continue to educate residents on the need to always avoid using drugs without prescription. (NAN)
