Diri was sworn in alongside his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, in a brief ceremony, by the Chief Justice of Bayelsa State, Justice Kate Abiri, at the Bayelsa State Government House, Yenagoa, the state capital.
Before calling the governor and the deputy governor-elect for the administration of the oath, the Chief judge said: “I Can confirm that the two persons to be sworn today have met all the conditions precedent for the administration of the oat of office.”
The event is coming as violence continues to rock the state capital, following protests by members and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC), whose candidate, David Lyon that initially won the election was disqualified in a verdict delivered by the Supreme Court on Thursda.
The escalation of the protest, which started on Friday morning, led to the police imposing a curfew to check the resulting riots with the Commissioner of Police, Uche Anozia, ordering that the curfew would last between 8am to 6am beginning from Friday to Sunday, adding that eight persons had been arrested so far.
