President Bola Tinubu is currently holding a private meeting with the newly appointed Service Chiefs at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
This closed-door session follows last week’s rapid change in Nigeria’s military leadership, which saw many Service Chiefs leave their posts and new leaders appointed across all branches of the armed forces.
The timing of these changes, amid widespread speculation about a possible coup attempt, has fueled public debate and political discussion. Reports of unrest within some security sectors circulated on social media, raising concerns over internal disagreements.
However, the Presidency stated that the reshuffle was a strategic move aimed at “reinvigorating the defense and security architecture” and ensuring a more coordinated response to emerging national threats.
Although the official agenda of the meeting has not been disclosed, sources indicate discussions focus on strengthening Nigeria’s security system and improving coordination among the armed forces.
The meeting comes shortly after the President approved a significant restructuring of the military hierarchy, which the Presidency described as part of ongoing efforts to increase professionalism, efficiency, and accountability within the country’s security agencies.
Attendees include the Chief of Defense Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Waidi Shaibu; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke; and the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas.
This meeting is viewed as a key moment in shaping Nigeria’s defense policies under President Tinubu. It also marks his first direct engagement with the new military leadership since their appointments, setting clear mandates and expectations for performance.
