The lawyer representing controversial social media activist, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), Deji Adeyanju has warned that the law does not protect reckless speech, urging him to exercise caution in his public commentary and avoid actions that could attract legal consequences.
The counsel,  issued the warning on Sunday via his X handle while addressing concerns about VDM’s recurring legal troubles, especially stemming from his sharp criticisms of public figures and institutions.
Adeyanju noted that despite frequently reaching out to VDM to offer guidance, the activist often disregards his counsel. He stressed that while freedom of expression is a fundamental right, it must be exercised within the provisions of the law.
He revealed that VDM’s activities have placed him under constant scrutiny from security agencies, warning that such exposure could lead to more frequent arrests and detentions.
“I’ve told him to stop taking unnecessary risks. The law doesn’t protect reckless speech. He must be cautious and act with wisdom,” Adeyanju said.
He also pointed out that VDM’s outspokenness has made him a target, adding that legal representation alone may not always shield him from the consequences of persistent defiance or provocation of authorities.
“If something happens to you today, Nigerians will move on tomorrow. We do always overrate ourselves but,  Nigerians really rate nobody,” Adeyanju added, highlighting the risks of self-sacrifice in a society he believes offers little lasting support for public advocates.
This comes in the wake of reports that VDM is facing fresh legal threats linked to his comments on social media platforms.
Although Adeyanju reaffirmed his commitment to defending VDM’s rights,  he  emphasized that avoiding confrontation would serve him better in the long run.
VDM, known for his controversial takes and viral videos, has consistently argued that his activism is aimed at holding the powerful to account and calling out injustice.
However, his critics always accuse him of using inflammatory rhetoric and unverified claims to stir public reactions. He has not publicly reacted to his lawyer’s counsel yet.
