The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Umar Abdullahi Abubakar of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the Abaji Area Council chairmanship election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Announcing the result on Sunday, the INEC Presiding Officer for Abaji, Muhammad Usman, said Abubakar polled a total of 15,535 votes to emerge victorious in the keenly contested poll held on Saturday.
According to the results announced, the candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) came second with 5,357 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured 4,547 votes. The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) garnered 53 votes, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) recorded 37 votes.
Declaring the outcome, Usman stated, “Umar Abdullahi Abubakar of APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.”
The Abaji result forms part of the broader FCT Area Council elections conducted across the six councils—Abaji, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Kwali.
In the overall outcome of the council polls, the APC secured victories in Abaji, Kwali, AMAC and Bwari, while the PDP clinched Gwagwalada, further consolidating the APC’s dominance in the FCT council elections.
