The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Area Command, has handed over a massive consignment of cannabis sativa valued at ₦172.9 million to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The move marks a milestone in inter-agency collaboration against drug trafficking.
During a press briefing held at the Command’s headquarters in Idiroko, the Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Godwin Otunla, disclosed that the interception was based on actionable intelligence, leading to the search of a Mercedes Benz truck suspected of carrying prohibited items.
“Upon initial examination, the truck was suspected to be conveying prohibited items. Further inspection revealed several parcels of cannabis sativa, commonly known as marijuana, cleverly hidden in fabricated compartments—also known as a false bottom,” Comptroller Otunla said.
A total of 2,693 parcels of cannabis weighing 1,450kg were recovered during the operation, with a duty-paid value of ₦172,920,000. One suspect was arrested in connection with the seizure.
The illicit drugs and the suspect were formally handed over to Commander Williams Ekundayo of the NDLEA Idiroko Special Command. Commending the Customs’ efforts, Ekundayo stated:
“This is a commendable seizure that will go a long way in protecting our youths from the devastating effects of drug abuse.”
Comptroller Otunla also used the occasion to celebrate the recent international recognition of the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, who was elected as Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Council.
“This prestigious global recognition reflects the CGC’s visionary leadership and commitment to service reform and modernisation,” Otunla said.
He further announced that the Ogun I Command has received 13 new patrol vehicles, allocated by the CGC to boost operational efficiency.
“We are deeply grateful to him and the entire management team for their continued support,” he added.
The event by the NCS’s is an ongoing commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s borders and curbing illicit trade, while enhancing its enforcement infrastructure for more effective service delivery.
