The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday announced that the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise recorded 69,376 pre-registration on its portal in seven hours.
National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee,  Sam Olumekun made the disclosure in a statement released to journalists
He stated that the exercise commenced on Monday August 18, 2025, with online pre-registration of voters.
According to him, “The registration portal went live at 8.30am, but by 3.30pm, just seven hours later, as many as 69,376 Nigerians pre-registered online. Of this figure, 33,803 (48.7%) are male while 35,573 (51.3%) are female. In terms of age, 48,033 (69.2%) are young persons aged 18-34.
“The portal is available 24 hours everyday of the week at https://cvr.inecnigeria.org
The Commissioner further stated that the online exercise will be complemented with person to person registration option in all the 774 INEC offices including the Federal Capital Territory for those who cannot use the online option.
“Meanwhile, the Commission is set to commence the in-person registration option on Monday 25th August 2025 at our 811 State and Local Government offices nationwide from 9.00am – 3.00pm during weekdays (Monday to Friday) only. This will enable those who prefer the in-person option to register and for the online pre-registrants to complete their registration. The two options will proceed simultaneously throughout the duration of the CVR as indicated in the schedule earlier released by the Commission, ” he added.
According to him, the Commission would from next week, give weekly updates on the CVR, including detailed breakdown by State, gender, age, occupation and disability.
Olukanmi said that citizens who lost their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) as well as those wishing to transfer to a new polling unit can effect the changes during the exercise. He warned that double registration is a violation of electoral act.
He added, “For emphasis, the public should note that voter registration is only open to Nigerian citizens who are at least 18 years old and who are not registered voters. Double or multiple registration is a violation of the law. However, inter-State/FCT and intra-State/FCT transfer of voters as well as the replacement of lost or damaged voters cards are allowed during the CVR”.
INEC had reported that about 93.47 million Nigerians are registered voters but lamented that out of this number, only 24.9 million representing 26.72 percent, voted in the 2023 general election.
