As the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) approaches its landmark 50th anniversary, the organization is actively seeking a strong partnership with the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure a befitting celebration.
This commitment was made on Monday as the Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission, Mrs. Damtien Tchintchibidja, held crucial discussions with Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairperson of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, in Abuja.
The high-level meeting, convened at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters, Abuja, focused squarely on advancing the preparations for the much-anticipated golden jubilee. Speaking earlier, Tchintchibidja outlined the comprehensive programs and activities meticulously planned to take place across all ECOWAS Member States. In her address, she specifically highlighted the central and indispensable role Nigeria is expected to play in these significant celebrations, acknowledging the nation’s enduring importance within the regional bloc.
The Vice President eloquently articulated that “The 50th anniversary presents an opportunity far beyond mere ceremonial events. It offers a vital moment for the entire ECOWAS community to reflect on the remarkable achievements of the past five decades while also engaging in critical self-assessment to identify areas where improvements can be made to better serve the citizens of the community.”
Recognizing the fundamental importance of joint effort, Mrs. Tchintchibidja formally requested the active and substantive involvement of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the intricate planning process. She specifically sought the Ministry’s representation on the technical and planning committee that is spearheading the organization of the 50th-anniversary commemoration, scheduled to be held on May 28th, 2025, in the bustling city of Lagos, Nigeria.
On his part, Ambassador Tuggar responded with a firm commitment while pledging his support and solidarity, and assured the ECOWAS Vice President of Nigeria’s unwavering support in delivering a truly memorable and impactful 50th-anniversary celebration. He pledged the full participation of the Ministry and the broader Nigerian government, guaranteeing that the event will be robust, inclusive, resonate with the youth demographic, and ultimately achieve resounding success.
The engagement between the ECOWAS Vice President and Nigeria’s Foreign Minister marks a significant stride forward in the collaborative endeavors to commemorate this historic milestone. With the May 28th date rapidly approaching, the unified front presented by the ECOWAS Commission and the Nigerian government signals a promising celebration that befits five decades of regional cooperation and heralds a future of shared progress.
