+DEMANDS SACK OF INTERIOR MINISTER;
A democracy inclined Non-Governmental organization-HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA [HURIWA] has asked the Federal Government to implement concrete and comprehensive security measures to bring to an end the incessant bombing and violent prison attacks by suspected terrorists just as the group asked President Good luck Jonathan to sack without further delay for crass dereliction of duty the minister of interior Mr Abba Moro.
In a statement to the media by the National Coordinator Comrade Emanuel Onwubiko and the National Director of Media Affairs Miss Zainab Yusuf, HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA [HURIWA] in reaction to the spate of bombing campaign in Maiduguri, Borno State, Damaturu, the Yobe State Capital and Ado Ekiti the Ekiti state capital by suspected armed Islamic terrorists, the Rights group said President Jonathan must hearken to the voices of reason and of the greater majority of the Nigerian people by dismissing the current Interior Affairs Minister Mr Abba Moro who has in the last one year showed monumental evidence of crass incompetence and the total lack of political will to make necessary changes in the administration and security of prison facilities across the country and for his many failures recorded in the line of duty including the negligent mass slaughter of over a dozen job seeking Nigerian youths who were deceived to part with their hard earned money and were crammed into highly combustible and packed recruitment venues leading to series of nation wide bloody stampede. HURIWA regretted that a government that enjoys the mandate of the generality of Nigerians must implement the popular will of the people to protect them from unwarranted violence of all dimensions including the frequent violence visited on prison formations and the freeing into the larger society hardened suspected terrorists to unleash greater and more deadly violence on the civil populace.
Besides, the group said the Nigerian Government should mobilize Nigerians to be in the highest national state of alert ad indeed in a war mood following the exacerbation and the heightened state of vicious terrorist attacks across the North East zone of the Nigerian Nation and the unprecedented bloodshed in series of prison attacks by suspected armed Islamic terrorists. ”Officials of the Nigerian ministries of information and defence must wake up from slumber and jointly mobilize Nigerians to be in the highest state of alert and to remain vigilant to check the unprecedented state of terrorist attacks. The Federal Government should also take extra ordinary measures to formidably equip the military and also train all law abiding Nigerian adults to be ready to defend the territorial integrity of Nigeria that is currently under massive attacks from within and without. Besides, Nigeria should report to the UNITED NATIONS SECURITYOUNCIL the suspected liaison of the Chadian government and Nigerian based terrorists. There is the urgent global need to probe the links between chieftains of Boko Haram and the Chadian head of state. The UN must investigate the sources of arms and weapons deployed by the armed terrorists.”
HURIWA stated thus; ”The Nigerian President must listen to the voices of the people since that is the voice of God and take immediate, comprehensive and effective measures to secure the various prisons facilities all across the nation because of the far- reaching constitutional implication of allowing the armed terrorists to continue the evil practice of attacking prison facilities to release their detained members and to evade the cause of justice in clear breach of the Nigerian constitution which stipulates that offenders must be subjected to prosecution in the competent courts of law in line with section 6. The import of allowing the current regime of impunity to continue created through the frequent attacks of prison facilities and the illegal freeing of detainees most of whom are suppose to face serious criminal mass murder charges related to their involvement in violent and blood cuddling terrorism is that members of the international community will not take us seriously as a nation that respects the sanctity of its laws and jurisprudence. Nigeria must take action to put a stop to these series of systematic attacks of prisons. The minister in charge of this ministry and the comptroller General of the Nigerian Prisons must be sacked without delay. Government must constitute a panel of investigation to uncover the cartel within the prison and security formations that leaks out operational and classified information of the detention facilities whereby high profile terror suspects are detained. There are high wired connection between the various prison attacks in Lagos, Lokoja, Kogi state and now Ekiti by suspected terrorists with the suspicion that terror sponsors and masterminds now have their contacts in high places even in the Nigerian ministry of interior.”
The Rights group has also called on Government to put all Nigerians in the heightened state of alert to be focused towards doing all within their reach to assist the Nigerian Government to wage successful anti-terror war. The Rights group has also canvassed the holding of high profile presidential consultation between President Jonathan and all the cleared and accredited Presidential aspirants of all the parties to put heads together and work out modalities and mechanisms for resolving these worrying security challenges across the country so as to create a healthy and safe atmosphere for the conduct of next year’s election.
