The Lagos State Government has announced that the full enforcement of its ban on single-use plastics (SUPs), including nylon bags, will commence on July 1, 2025.
This move is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to minimise the use of plastic waste and to promote cleanliness and environmental sustainability.
The ban, which was first announced in January 2024, has witnessed varying levels of compliance among retailers.
Of a fact, major supermarkets like ShopRite have discontinued the use of nylon bags and are offering reusable alternatives, while other retailers have been slow in compliance.
Many have continued to sell nylon bags, raising concerns about the effectiveness of the ban. Many Lagosians are of the opinion that total ban is impossible in the state.
The Lagos State Government has emphasised on the importance of public support and education in ensuring the success of the ban.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has urged Lagosians to bring their own reusable bags and support the government’s efforts to reduce plastic waste in the state.
The enforcement of the ban is expected to be gradual, with the government considering the challenges faced by businesses and consumers. However, the July 1 deadline marks a significant step toward achieving a cleaner and more sustainable environment in Lagos. Wether or not Lagosians will cooperate lies in the months ahead.
