Erosion; BNPP guber candidate cries for help, shops for N56m community development

by Our Reporter
Unless succour comes the way of the Better Nigeria Progressive Party
(BNPP) gubernatorial candidate in the last general elections in Anambra
state, Mr Ikem Ohanugo and others may lose their houses to erosion
menace.

The Idima autonomous community in Ideato North Local Government Area of
Imo state where Ohanugo and others hailed from was already devastated by
water flooding which had destroyed most of the farmlands and washed away
economic crops.

Expressing worries, Ohanugo who is also the President General of the
community, told this journalist in Onitsha, Anambra state on Sunday that
“the erosion menace is at the back of my house and if nothing is done
urgently to stop it, my house and six others will give way with scores
of the occupants rendered homeless”.

He recalled that they had appealed to the immediate past governor of Imo
state, Owelle Rochas Okorocha to come to their rescue, but to no avail.

“Presently the erosion menace located at Okpakanaezeani village, has
caught off the road between Idima and Izuii communities. It is now a
forest site.

“We are appealing to the present state government led by Gov. Emeka
Ihedioha and Federal Government to come to our rescue.

“We have planted bamboo trees that were uprooted by the menace and my
building and others are at the verge of collapse,’’ he said.

On his plan towards the infrastructural development of the Idima
community Ohanugo said he is shopping for about N56million to give the
community a face-lift.

“The development will come in three batches; we are starting with
electrification of the community. Already we have electrified our Afor
Market with solar energy.

“We needed about 500 poles to electrify the entire community and
N18million will complete the job, while N25million and N3million will be
used to construct a shopping plaza in Afor Market and integrated
services respectively and others.
