The House of Representatives has announced the passing of one of its members, Rep. Muhammad Danjuma Hassan, describing his death as a profound loss to the National Assembly and the nation.
Rep. Hassan, who represented Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency of Kano State, died on Friday evening in Abuja after a period of illness. He was 66.
Until his death, he served as the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary and was elected into the Green Chamber in 2023 on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
In a statement issued on Saturday by the House Spokesman, Rep. Akintunde Rotimi Jr., the lawmakers expressed deep sorrow over the loss, noting that the late legislator was a distinguished legal mind whose contributions significantly shaped legislative development and constitutional processes in Nigeria.
The House noted that Hassan was widely regarded as one of the foremost legislative counsel and legal draftsmen in the country, with several laws enacted over the years bearing his imprint.
Before joining partisan politics, he had a long and accomplished career within the National Assembly bureaucracy, where he rose through the ranks to the highest administrative level and retired as a Permanent Secretary. His vast experience in governance and institutional memory, the statement said, greatly enriched his legislative work and contributions to national discourse.
As a lawmaker, Hassan was described as diligent, reflective, and committed to strengthening Nigeria’s justice system and upholding the rule of law. His role as Deputy Chairman of the Judiciary Committee was marked by informed contributions rooted in administrative competence and deep institutional knowledge.
Beyond the Judiciary Committee, he also served on several other committees, including Public Petitions, Aviation, Solid Minerals, Constitution Review, and Treaties, Protocols and Agreements, where he played active roles in legislative oversight and policy formulation.
Colleagues remembered him for his professionalism, humility, calm disposition, and strong commitment to consensus-building.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, extended condolences on behalf of the House to the deceased’s family, constituents, and the government and people of Kano State.
Rep. Hassan is expected to be buried later on Saturday in accordance with Islamic rites.
