Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi, has confirmed that he will contest the 2027 presidential election, saying his ambition is driven not by a desire for power but by a commitment to service, humility and the urgent need to rescue Nigeria from deepening challenges.
Obi revealed his intention during a lengthy engagement with Nigerians on X (formerly Twitter) Space, where he responded to questions on his political future, governance and national cohesion.
He maintained that his decision to run again was rooted in principle and a sense of responsibility, rather than personal ambition.
“Yes, I will be on the ballot in 2027,” Obi said. “But I am not God. Tomorrow is not guaranteed.”
The comment framed a broader discussion in which Obi mixed personal introspection with policy perspectives, arguing that Nigeria’s leadership crisis can be addressed if competence, integrity and compassion are placed at the centre of governance.
He stressed that his aspiration should not be mistaken for desperation, cautioning his supporters against resorting to abuse, hostility or aggressive conduct in defending him or his views.
“I am not desperate to be president. I am desperate to see Nigeria work,” Obi said, adding that insults, arrogance and political intimidation only worsen existing divisions and undermine the unity the country urgently needs.
Obi also appealed for issue-based engagement, stressing that Nigeria’s challenges , including insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment and poor governance, require collective effort rather than blind loyalty to individuals or parties.
According to him, meaningful change will only come when citizens demand accountability and leaders see public office as a platform for service, not entitlement.
The former governor reiterated his belief that Nigeria’s problems are not insurmountable, insisting that with prudent management of resources, transparency and a people-centred approach to governance, the country can chart a new course.
As political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general election, Obi’s remarks underscore a blend of resolve and restraint affirming his intention to run while cautioning that leadership must be defined by humility, service and a shared commitment to pulling Nigeria back from the brink.
