The Katsina State Government is pushing to take over the 10-megawatt windfarm in the state as part of efforts to boost electricity supply and integrate solar energy for expanded capacity.
Governor Dikko Radda made this known on Wednesday during a strategic meeting with the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, in Abuja. The talks focused on aligning state and federal efforts to improve electricity access in Katsina.
“We are ready to take over the Katsina windfarm and work with private partners like Genesis Energy to scale up power generation through solar hybridization,” Radda said.
The windfarm, originally built by the Federal Government, has been underutilised for years. Katsina hopes to revive and upgrade it through a public-private partnership to address local energy needs and stimulate economic activity.
In response, Minister Adelabu welcomed the initiative, describing it as “a bold and forward-thinking move” by Governor Radda. He noted that the plan aligns with the 2023 Electricity Act, which grants states the authority to develop power projects independently.
“This is in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims for universal energy access and economic empowerment through sustainable power,” Adelabu added.
He assured that the Federal Government would support the state’s takeover plans and ensure a smooth concession process.
The meeting signals growing momentum for state-led energy initiatives as Nigeria decentralizes its power sector. Katsina’s proposed hybrid wind-solar plant could become a model for other states seeking to expand electricity access.
