Mrs Sarah Jibril, the Special Adviser to the President on Ethics and Moral Values, has called on politicians to be more disciplined and have the fear of God in all their dealings.
Jibril, who made the call on Monday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said discipline among politicians, who are supposed to behave like “angels’’, would facilitate the development of the country.
“Politicians are supposed to be the best of angels anywhere, anytime and should demonstrate the best of standards.
“We expect politicians to be the first to demonstrate the fear of Almighty God in their dealings.’’
She noted that when they win elections, politicians take oath of office to abide by the laws of their creator and the laws of the country, to be the best of persons.
Jibril said that if politicians show exemplary behaviour it would enhance the transformation agenda of the Federal Government and reminded politicians that as servants of the people, they show accord respect to the electorate.
“Being a politician, you should remember that you are the servants of the people; you are not to become lords or think that you have the monopoly of wisdom.
Jibril, however, urged Nigerians to be more disciplined and have a change of attitude to do the right thing always, for the betterment of the country.
“It is high time we key into the transformation agenda, the vision of self change, self repentance, self modification, self discipline, self regulation and what we call autonomous morality.
She said that self discipline would improve the transformation of the citizens, who should be willing to police themselves without being policed by the police.
Jibril advised religious leaders to preach truth and practise what they preach, adding that they should be transparent in their dealings in order to show good example to their followers
She said that her office was committed to inculcating social values in Nigerians.
“We are not here for joke; this ethics office will not tolerate any nonsense because we are deeply committed to honouring the integrity of Nigerians.
“As parents, it is high time we said what is bad is bad and what is good is good, what is right is right, what is wrong is wrong and nobody is above the law,’’ she said.
